Extraoral dental procedures and facial surgery for dental disease and related complications (including further involvement of other parts of the head such as nasal and paranasal cavities, the external ear and the tympanic bullae) represent a significant portion of therapeutic surgery in pet rabbits.
This 4-hour advanced wet lab is aimed to review and teach a practical approach to dental procedures and orofacial surgery of pet rabbits.
Using cadavers, participants will simulate the following dental procedures, surgical approaches, and techniques:
- approach to the incisive portion and body of the mandible;
- approach to the masseteric fossa and marsupialization technique of the masseter muscle;
- subtotal rostral mandibulectomy;
- lateral approach to the zygomatic arch and the alveolar bulla;
- enucleation of the eye;
- dorsal rhinotomy and rhinostomy;
- lateral pararhinotomy and pararhinostomy;
lateral ear canal resection (LECR), including techniques with or without complete excision of the cartilaginous acoustic meatus;
- partial ear canal resection (PECR);
- lateral bulla osteotomy (minimal and standard approach);
ventral bulla osteotomy.
Visual tutorials (photo series, videos) displaying the surgical procedures have been included within the on demand part of this course, but will also be reviewed and available for participants during the lab.
